One-to-one Mentoring Program

Established in 1925, Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters (CBBBS) is a private non-profit independent organization, affiliated with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, fully dedicated to enriching the lives of children of all faiths and backgrounds throughout Los Angeles County. CBBBS conducts its services from a headquarters near downtown Los Angeles and through four regional offices.

CBBBS core program matches trained, caring volunteer adults willing to be a special friend and role model to children of all faiths between the ages of 7 and 14. When matched with a child, a Big Brother or Big Sister can offer words of encouragement, listen to a child's concerns, enjoy activities together and just be a friend. Currently, there are more than 250 matches, with many more wishing to be matched.

A scientific study conducted by Public/Private Ventures for Big Brothers Big Sisters of America found that mentored youth are less inclined to use drugs and alcohol. They are more apt to stay in school and do better work, less inclined to violence and better able to relate with peers and family when compared to non-mentored youth.

Mentoring doesn't just benefit the child; it also enriches the life of the volunteer. Being special in a child's life, enjoying experiences together through a child's eye, offering a guiding hand and a caring ear will make a difference in the mentor's life as well. It's easy. Anyone can volunteer, man or woman of any faith, background and age. All that is asked is a one-year commitment to spend a few hours with your special child two or three times each month. It doesn't have to be expensive. Use your imagination: ride bikes, go to the beach, skateboard, take a hike or just talk. What is important is taking an interest in a young person's life.

Our volunteers don't do it alone. Through skilled caseworkers, they receive ongoing training and support, and are assisted in finding just the right Little Brother or Sister with whom to be matched. Moreover, you become part of the Catholic Big Brothers Big Sisters family, meet other great volunteers and kids, and can participate in fun group activities.
